Abstract
Experiments using a glass window extruder are presented. These provide direct observation of the different melting behavior among various polymers. Simulations performed using commercially available software showed good correlation with the observations. The data obtained provides valuable insight into the melting behavior which, can be used to evaluate and ultimately improve the capabilities of simulation software as well as screw designs.

No. 2 COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF A NEW EXTENSIONAL FLOW MIXER
Weining (Wayne) Song, Ph.D., Extensional Flow Mixer Inc.1
Abstract
A patented Extensional Flow Mixer (EFM) (1) has been developed in which plastics is hydrodynamically mixed by flowing through a series of convergent and divergent regions so that efficient dispersive and distributive mixing can be achieved. The EFM can be attached to any plastics pumping machine, such as gear pump, a single-screw extruder (SSE) or twin-screw extruder (TSE), incorporated into an injection molding or blow molding machine, etc. However, EFM has been primarily developed for homogenization, mixing and compounding in extrusion.
Comprehensive laboratory and industrial tests have been conducted, especially for film applications. These indicate that in some applications the mixing of a SSE with an EFM can outperform that of a TSE. Examples of results on gel elimination, strength enhancement and morphology changes will be presented. (see EFM for details)
